Mobility devices like a powered wheelchair, scooter or manual wheelchair greatly improve the quality of life of those with mobility problems or handicaps. But you don’t have to be permanently confined to a wheelchair to benefit from such a device.

For elders or people that can walk on their own, but not for distance or duration, a wheelchair allows them to take family trips and get around. A wheelchair can make it possible for these people to enjoy Disney World, malls, parks, beach, resort areas, sporting events, picnics and much more.

Quality of life for my own grandmother was greatly improved after she got her wheelchair. A power scooter was a natural progression for my mother once her health deteriorated to a point where she could not walk without help. These devices improve quality of life for caregivers, friends and family in addition to those with the handicap.

Most people don’t realize that wheelchairs, power scooters, power wheel chairs and other mobile carrier devices can also result in accidents. Simply getting in and out of a wheelchair can result in a person slipping, falling to the ground, or somehow otherwise hurting themselves. The simple act of going to the bathroom, getting in out and of a chair or bed, transitioning to a car or van, or wheeling over a wheelchair ramp or going over a curb can be dangerous. Wheelchair lifts for access to vans or even stair glides can breakdown, causing concern. These are little things we take for granted. But when you are alone and disabled, these little things can not only be frustrating, but dangerous.

Most people don’t realize that wheelchair accidents are fairly common. Ramps can be especially dangerous where slipping off the ramp or getting stuck are also common occurrences. These situations while potentially dangerous, are also very frustrating and further drive home the reality of the individuals limitations. Calling for help with a cell phone is an option in some cases, but in others an automated system could be the better answer.

But all is not lost. Today’s technology can provide automated assistance for those in need of it. One such new product the ScooterTracker is a system that can track the location of a mobility device or individual. A simple push-button on a pendant or wrist strap can call for assistance in an emergency. ScooterTracker can call for help anywhere in the United States and abroad using the nationwide cellular network. Automated help can be provided using sensors to identify an accident or rider that has fallen from the wheelchair.

If you or someone you know are concerned about wheelchair accidents, then consider electronic help devices. For more information on the dangers of wheelchair accidents and related safety products, please visit the ScooterTracker website.
